About
Cassie Penn was born near London and moved to Cornwall aged four with her family. Cassie trained as an illustrator at Falmouth University, completing an MA in Illustration: Authorial Practice in 2008. Cassie works both as a freelance artist, most recently painting and drawing murals for Inner Circle Consulting London, Truro BID/ Pydar Pop Up/ Cornwall Council, Tate St Ives, and as an artist in residence at Trevithick Learning Academy.
In early 2023, Cassie was selected and then completed the Clore Emerging Leader’s residential, Leamington Spa. Cassie also works as an Assistant Curator, Public Programmes at Tate St Ives, focusing on working with artists in residence and the community. Cassie was fortunate to be put forward for her work with the artists and the community as an Assistant Curator by the Artistic Director at Tate St Ives for a professional development opportunity at Grizedale Arts, Lake District. Grizedale Arts is widely considered to lead in rural community arts. She was consequently accepted on to this esteemed course, which has become transformative to her practice.
Cassie is inspired by the community around her and enjoys the challenge of producing work in collaboration with this audience. When painting, this input sends projects in unexpected directions, the output becoming richer for it.
Cassie is also influenced by the coastal flora and fauna of the natural environment of Cornwall, visiting gardens and learning about horticulture from her husband who works in the horticultural industry.
